Increased Entitlements Proposed for Various Leaves in British Columbia April 20 2018
The BC government has proposed changes that would create new and extended leaves for employees who are caregivers, expecting a child as well as those who may be grieving. The changes will ensure that BC is either matching or providing longer job-protected leaves for their employees.
The following provides a brief summary of some of the proposed changes:
- Increased entitlement for mothers expecting a child;
- Increased parental leave;
- Up to 52 weeks of unpaid leave for parents dealing with a crime-related disappearance of child;
- Up to 104 weeks of unpaid leave for parents grieving the death of a child; and
- Compassionate care leave will almost triple from 8 to 27 weeks.
New Democrat Labour Minister Harry Bains was quoted saying that the changes “will not erase the pain experienced during a personal or family crisis, but can help ease the worry and stress over job security.”
We will continue to report on this story as it develops.
- Une augmentation des droits pour les mères qui attendent un enfant;
- Prolongation du congé parental;
- Jusqu'à 52 semaines de congé sans solde pour les parents dont l’enfant est disparu en lien avec un acte criminel;
